Preach 4

PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED GOOD NEWS

4283 PROEUANGELIZOMAI (1): pro = before (earlier in time) + euangelizo = announce good news; previously announced good news. This word occurs only once in the FCM (NT), in Gal.3.8: "And the writing, foreseeing that God would justify the nations by trust, previously announced good news to Abraham that, 'In you all the nations will be benefited.'" This is a partial quotation of Gen.12.3: "...and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed" (NASV).

The King James Version translates Gal.3.8: "And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel (proeuangelizomai) unto Abraham, [saying], In thee shall all nations be blessed." But the NIV more accurately translates proeuangelizomai "...announced the gospel in advance." There is a great difference in meaning between the words "preached" and "announced."

See "announce good news" (2097 euangelizo) and "preach" for further discussion.
