Desire

2307 THELEMA (62): a want; what a person desires or intends done; objectively, the thing wanted. Usually translated "will," but rather than being a demand by God, thelema usually represents a desire that God wants humans (who have "free will") to comply with. That is, God doesn't force humans to "do his will." In 1Pe.4.2 & 1Jn.2.17 "lust" (1939 epithumia) is contrasted to what God wants. Comp. "to purpose" (1014 boulomai).

THINGS WANTED BY GOD: That which will come to pass because that is what God wants. But in Mt.6.10 note human concurrence with God's desire, and in Mt.7.21 the importance of doing what God wants.

DESIRE (50) Mt.6.10; 7.21; 12.50; 18.14; 26.42. Mk.3.35. Jn.4.34; 5.30b; 6.38b,39,40; 7.17; 9.31. Act.13.22; 21.14; 22.14. Rom.1.10; 2.18; 12.2; 15.32. 1Co.1.1; 7.37. 2Co.1.1; 8.5. Gal.1.4. Eph.1.1, 5,9,11; 5.17; 6.6. Col.1.1,9; 4.12. 1Th.4.3; 5.18. 2Ti.1.1. Heb.10.7,9,10,36; 13.21. 1Pe.2.15; 3.17; 4.2,19. 2Pe.1.21. 1Jn.2.17; 5.14. Rev.4.11.

THAT WHICH IS WANTED BY THE DEVIL:

DESIRE (1) 2Ti.2.26.

THINGS WANTED BY A HUMAN (INCLUDING YESU IN THE FLESH):

DESIRE (8) Mt.21.31. Lk.12.47,47; 22.42; 23.25. Jn.5.30a; 6.38a. 1Co.16.12.

CRAVINGS, DESIRES OF THE HUMAN BODY:

DESIRE (3) Jn.1.13,13. Eph.2.3.

2308 THELESIS (1): a wanting of something, an act of desire.

DESIRE Heb.2.4.

2309 THELO (204): to want, desire or intend, as determined by the context. Thelo is not used as an imperative in God's First Century Revelation (FCR) to express God's "will." It is not necessary for God to command or demand, but merely speak his want or desire, for it to come about. An exception is when God "wants" humans to do something he allows them to choose whether to obey (and of course reap the consequences). So the word, "will" (as used in older translations) is too strong a word in modern English to express God's wants or desires. Comp. the noun form, "desire" (2307 thelema).

The verb "will" should not be confused with the auxilliary "will," which conveys future desire; e.g., "I will that..." versus "I am willing."

Used with the noun, "a desire" (2307 thelema), in Jn.7.17. Used with "yearn" (1937 epithumeo) Jn.8.44, and "lust" (1939 epithumia) in Gal.5.16-17.

WHAT GOD WANTS OR WHAT HE IS WILLING TO LET HAPPEN:

FOR THINGS TO OCCUR AS GOD WANTS: The KJV uses "will" and "wish" interchangeably in these passages; but it is God's "desire" or "want" that is actually expressed.

WANT (6) Mt.27.43. 1Co.12.18; 15.38. 1Ti.2.4. Heb.10.5,8.

FOR GOD TO BE WILLING FOR SOMETHING TO OCCUR: In each of these passages a human states his desire, but yields to God's desire with the phrase, "...if God is willing"
