Anointed

5546 CHRISTIANOS (3): of Christ. A Christian; that is, one belonging toor dedicated to Yesu the Anointed One, as in Act.11.28.

5547 CHRISTOS (511): A title given to Yesu; usually transliterated "Christ," but it really should be translated into English. Wouldn't Peter's declaration in Mt.16.17 be more understandable if it read, "You are the Anointed One, the Son of the living God?" In Jn.1.41 Christos is shown to be a translation of the Hebrew word, Messiah: "We have found the Messiah (which is translated, Anointed One);" and in Jn.4.25, I realize that Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed One." In God's Ancient Revelation (AR), the Hebrew word, "Messiah", in the is translated, "Anointed One" in the ASV (cf., Dan.9.25,26).

In the anointing of David (1Sam.16.1-13) anointing with oil was the outward sign that God had chosen him. Yesu was chosen by God but it is not specifically revealed that he was anointed with oil. So, perhaps "Chosen One" would be a clearer translation; but "Anointed One" seems to be more accurate. Comp. "false Chosen One" (5580 pseudochristos). Comp. "anoint, rub with oil" (0218 aleipho).
